Our ageing population should be a major trend and driver that will shape the future of planning in South Australia
COTA SA welcomes the opportunity to provide a submission to the draft Murray Mallee Regional Plan.
Our population is ageing. In June 2020, approximately 16% of Australians were aged 65 and over and this is projected to rise to 21-23% by 2066. Our ageing population should be a major trend and driver that will shape the future of planning in South Australia.
The Murray Mallee region is home to over 73,000 people, with a projected additional 28,000 permanent residents by 2051 under the high growth scenario. Nearly 50% of this projected growth is expected in people aged 70 years and over. This demographic trend presents both challenges and opportunities: to ensure older people can age well in place with access to the housing, infrastructure, and services they need.
We have responded to the draft plan where we believe COTA SA can make a meaningful contribution to decisions that will shape the lives of older people in the Murray Mallee region.
The submission addresses key areas including:
- People, Housing and Liveability
- Productive Economy – Health and Aged Care Services
- Natural Resources, Environment and Landscapes
- Transport and Infrastructure
COTA SA appreciates the opportunity to contribute to the development of the Murray Mallee Regional Plan and supports its ambition to shape a region that is sustainable, liveable and future-focused.
