South Australia has a new 10 year Plan for Ageing Well!
South Australia’s Plan for Ageing Well 2026–2036 was launched recently by the Hon Nat Cook MP, the Minister for Seniors and Ageing Well.
The Plan was shaped by the voices of nearly 3,200 older South Australians, and draws inspiration from human rights approaches to ageing, covering independence, participation, care, self-fulfillment and dignity. It sets out a statewide vision to ensure that as people live longer, they can also live better. The Plan identifies four core priorities that matter most to people as they age:
- be safe and well
- have peace of mind
- feel valued and visible
- participate in society
Implementation will occur through a series of action plans, beginning with the first five-year plan (2026–2031), which will be developed in partnership with government, NGOs, community organisations and older people themselves. Overall, the Plan aims to build a fairer, more connected and more age inclusive South Australia - one where older people are respected, supported and able to participate fully in all aspects of society.
It is well known that we have an ageing population, and that SA is the oldest mainland state. Renowned demographer, Bernard Salt spoke at the launch, and offered some insights from demographic data, focusing on opportunity, rather than the usual negative narrative. He spoke about ‘the great contentment’ - a demographic trend where older Australians, particularly those approaching or in retirement, experience a "mellowing" phase characterized by increased happiness, family focus, and reduced life pressures – and the opportunities for SA to lead the nation.
COTA SA is looking forward to working with the Office for Ageing Well and other partners to contribute to delivering this Plan for all South Australians. We are committed to helping bring this vision to life - alongside government, industry, and our communities.
