COTA SA welcomes search for solutions for 'stranded' patients

having an interim accommodation option for older people to be able to access the supports they need ….. is welcomed

Miranda Starke, Chief Executive COTA SA

Our Chief Executive Miranda Starke was quoted in InDaily, welcoming SA Health's search for a lower acuity facility for older people who are "stranded" in hospital as they are unable to find an aged care place or access the supports they need. Miranda also discussed this system problem further with David Bevan on ABC Adelaide (segment starts at 48 minutes).

"Older people do not want to be in hospital, they do not want to be stranded."

"We know that there have been older South Australians that have been 10 or 11 months in hospital, bouncing in and out of residential aged care, coming back to the hospital ..... and having an interim accommodation option for older people to be able to access the supports they need ….. is welcomed.”

One aspect of this complex issue, touched on in the ABC Adelaide interview, is the fact that the extensive wait for in-home aged care services and difficulties accessing these services, has exacerbated waiting lists and impacted the ability of older people to return home.

If this issue is impacting you, or someone you know, our Care Finders can help with navigating the aged care system and accessing supports, particularly for those with complex needs. Find out more on our Let's Talk Aged Care page or give us a call on 08 8232 0422.
