About the Scheme

COTA Visitors is part of the Community Visitors Scheme which is an Australian Government initiative that provides friendly volunteers for older people who are at risk of loneliness or social isolation. There are times when people may need a special friend to talk to, or a little help to stay connected to the wider community. This can happen whether living alone in their own homes, or in Aged Care Homes. Volunteer visitors bring conversation, news, new interest and friendship. Visitors may also bring a special connection through a shared language, life experience, or cultural understanding.

COTA Visitors

Volunteering as a COTA Visitor can be a rewarding experience for both the visitor and the person they visit. Many great friendships have been kindled through COTA Visitors.

COTA Visitors are empathetic, trustworthy people from varying backgrounds and cultures who enjoy visiting and spending time with older people in need of companionship, either in an aged care home or in their own home. COTA Visitors are matched with an older person nearby, and visit for an hour or so weekly or fortnightly.

Join as a Volunteer

COTA SA is recruiting volunteers who can enrich the life of an older person and can commit to visiting them for around 1 hour a week or fortnight in the Adelaide metropolitan area, the Mid-North or the Fleurieu Peninsula, Hills and Mallee regions. Applicants are required to:

  1. complete the application form above, including providing two referees
  2. have, or apply for a current and compliant National Police Check that specifies ‘unsupervised contact with vulnerable groups'
  3. be interviewed in person, by video call or phone call
  4. complete a brief Training session either online or in person
  5. provide evidence of current flu and COVID-19 vaccinations, if your preference is to visit in a Residential Aged Care Home

You can read more about being a COTA Visitor by reading the Role Description. Apply by clicking the button above.
