Did you know that in Australia, according to recent figures, the suicide rate in men aged 85+ years was a staggering 39.3 per 100,000 people compared with 11.8 deaths per 100,000 in males aged 15-19 years (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2015). Neither of these are good figures but at a time when more people are living longer, it is very concerning when a high percentage of older people are at risk of suicide.

In addition to this Depression is common throughout the Australian population, and older people are more likely to experience contributing factors such as physical illness or personal loss. It's thought that between 10 and 15 per cent of older people experience depression and about 10 per cent experience anxiety.

The theme of World Suicice Prevention Day this year was 'Take a Minute, Change a Life' - taking a minute can make all the difference to someone you care about - or to yourself. COTA SA is pleased to be hosting this event to raise awareness of the issues around suicide and older people's mental health - we hope you'll join us to learn more.
