Spotlight On: Moving Right Along

Every so often we'll dedicate a blog post to highlighting one of the many great programs we offer at COTA SA, this week we're taking a closer look at Moving Right Along.

What is Moving Right Along

Moving Right Along is one of several educational/informational programs that COTA SA offers through our Seniors Peer Education Centre - Peer Education is the process of people who share common ground teaching and learning from one another. The sessions and workshop materials for Moving Right Along were developed by the Department of Planning Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI).

The sessions which take approximately one hour aim to better inform people about the issues facing older drivers and encourage discussion about driving safely, motorised mobility scooter safety, and alternatives to driving.

Why attend a Moving Right Along Session

With more information people are better prepared and empowered to make their own decisions about driving and related issues - the need to stop driving or drive less can feel very disempowering so keeping greater control in the hands of the individual is vitally important.

What topics are on offer

There are three different session topics on offer under the Moving Right Along program:

Session 1: Older drivers, safer vehicles, fitness to drive and assessments (1hr):

• Maintaining the ability to drive safely and effectively for longer
• Fitness to drive - what does this mean?
• The effects that ageing, medical conditions and medications have on driving
• Types of assessments
• Legal obligations of licensed drivers in South Australia
• Sources of information and support available

Session 2: Travel options and retiring from driving (1hr):

• Options for personal car travel - positive and negative aspects of considering and/or using alternative modes of transport
• Retiring from driving
• Helping a family member or friend face the issue of reducing or giving up driving
• What to do if you are worried about someone's driving
• Legal obligations of licensed drivers in South Australia
• Sources of information and support available

Session 3: Motorised Mobility Scooters (1 hr):

• What rules apply for motorised mobility scooter users?
• Purchasing a motorised mobility scooter
• Is a motorised mobility scooter the right choice for me?
• Safe route planning
• Safe rider practices
